Yeah, I know that a couple entries ago I said I was totally not into gear, but you know that ppfwiett crack zzoemp pprrttt twitt twitt twitt-sound of let’s say the likes of Crank Sturgeon and Evil Moisture? Ever noticed those mystery tin boxes adorn with rivets for touchy touchy? C’mon, we all watch gear, so I know you must have. Crank Sturgeon had a couple of them that were worked into books at his place, pretty nifty, from a performance a friend of his once did – Apparently those devices go a long way back – They’re variants of the Kraakdoos, or Crackle Box, designed by Michel Waisvisz of STEIM in the seventies [schematics and info]. Michel Waisvisz is from Holland, and he died two days ago, aged 59. He didn’t leave many recordings (there is one record from 1978 available for download over here), as he considered music to be something that must be experienced (and brought) live. I must say that I hadn’t heard of him (or STEIM) either, till ZXZW mentioned his death on their blog.
Check youtube for Crackle Box or Kraakdoos. Lotsamovies.

Update: Margriet found a more recent Michel Waisvisz-release for sale on the web – containing live recordings made between 1977 and 2000.
