Over the weekend I found some time to finish the rhythm box I’ve been working on for quite a while. It features a rhythm module built around two 4089 chips, and 4 sound modules: snare/clap (with a seperate white noise output), conga/bass and two that with sounds that can be varied from beeps to beats by changing capacitor values.

Here are some more pictures of the project I’m currently working on – a “simple” rhythm machine based on a NE555 clock and two 4089′s, both holding 16 pre-programmed “patterns”. The board is fully soldered and tested, and I’m ready to start working on soldering the controls. Unfortunately I ran out of switches and waiting for new ones to arrive. As can be seen in the pictures I’m also trying out a new way of casing everything.

This is what I’m currently working on: a rhythm machine based on two 4089, synched by one NE555. The 4089 is a chip that contains 16 pre-programmed patterns, of which two or three sound sufficiently hard core to serve my purposes. One 4089 can gate a bass drum (visible on the second breadboard), the other one a snare, or hihat (which I’m still experimenting with). My ultimate goal is to build a full-fledge step-sequencer and a full set of modules for bass, snare etc, but there is still a long way of experimenting ahead of me. This circuit, once finished should enable me to concentrate on getting everything right before starting to build the real thing. This weekend I learned some sexy stuff like creating a virtual earth (for the ADSR-module, which stands for Attack Decay Sustain Release) and switched jacks. I recorded some pretty hard-core stuff already with the set-up in the picture, but I decided to hold my horses and not upload too much test-recordings to soundclound anymore. I’m saving stuff for a proper release.

I really should dedicate a post to each of the electronic modules I’ve build so far, but looking back isn’t my style lately. If you really want to keep updated when something new rolls off of the conveyer belt, make sure to check my facebook page from time to time. Looking forward (which is a far more interesting thing to do) I’m planning to do some experiments with ring modulation, try out an alternative crackle box-design, and ultimately build a second sequencer with some extra capabilities (one that can be used to gate stuff). Back in business. On the breadboard: a new oscillator circuit and a cracklebox. I also looked for some hidden sounds in a small 3 samples containing toygun (just for the fun of it). Below a set with some snippets from my testrecordings. Note that the cracklebox is much noisier than it is supposed to be – I think I like it this way though.
